Local Republican Chair Panics Over Obscure Election, Blames Tom Steyer

Charlie Crabtree, chair of the Whatcom Republicans, sent out a rather unusual call to action to his email followers today over the Whatcom Conservation District election.

Joy Monjure

Joy Monjure

Background: Former Everson City Councilwoman, legislative candidate, farming enthusiast and my favorite person from last year, Joy Monjure, has decided to run for a supervisor position of the Whatcom Conservation District.

This public entity (the district, not Monjure) provides information and resources to landowners on best ways to conserve water, and use their land responsibly.

The supervisor position is publicly elected through a strange process where you request a ballot first and then vote. You have to request one by Feb 9th – you can do so by clicking here.

Previously, this position was held by Republican party office Larry Helm. Now Joy Monjure is stepping up to lend her twenty years of experience with farming and land use to the position.

Naturally, this terrifies Crabtree, who sent out this email. Note: all spelling and grammar errors are his, not mine.

ALL VOTERS IN WHATCOM COUNTY ARE ELIGIBLE.
A Special Election not run by the Auditor, is happening in Whatcom County, you will NOT get a ballot unless you request one.

Larry Helm is running to be re-elected as Whatcom Conservation District supervisor. He was first elected in 2012 and has served one 3 year term. The other person who’s filed for this position ran against Rep. Vincent Buys as a democrat last year, Joy Monjure.

Unverified Reports have come to the Fourth Corner that door belling is going on in downtown Bellingham for Larry Helm’s opponent. Whether the doorbelling is paid by Tom Steyer interest as in last year’s elections we don’t know.

RUN FOR THE HILLS! Tom Steyer may be involved!

This is my favorite picture of Charlie Crabtree

This isn’t the first time Crabtree has completely missed the mark. Two years ago, he blamed an editorial in the Herald on John Stark, who was a reporter and has nothing to do with the editorial section.

Similarly, after the county council drubbing his party received in 2013, he complained that Ken Mann and Carl Weimer weren’t really elected to their positions because their districts didn’t vote for them nearly as much as the 1st district did – apparently unclear how “at-large” voting works.

I politely recommend that Mr. Crabtree take several deep breaths, perhaps into a paper bag if that will help. For everyone else who reads this blog, please go ahead and request a ballot so that you may vote for the talented and resourceful Joy Monjure.

  1. Okay, let’s parse the actual email:
    1) The heading is neutral.
    2) Paragraphs 1 & 2 are just information.
    3) Paragraph 3 is just the local Republicans whipping up the troops. Yes Tom Steyer is the boogeyman BUT the local Democrats don’t even have the sense to use the real boogeymen, i.e. the Koch Brothers. This is a major failing on the part of the local liberals. [“10 degrees to the left of center in good times, 10 degrees to the right of center if it affects them personally.” – Phil Ochs 1966]

The local Repubs have their ground game formula down pat AND they go to meetings and raise a ruckus. The pale, wishy-washy Democrats are pikers in comparison. If it wasn’t for the Bellingham fuzzie-wuzzies, the Republicans would win every election hands down. [And here you thought I would never have anything good to say for the space cadets in Bellingham!]

Yes Charlie Crabtree is delusional BUT he knows what he is doing. The Repubs and Tea Party whackos are much more dangerous than the so-called progressives and liberals think.

    • Hey Walter, I see there aren’t any “local Democrats” disagreeing with your very accurate description of them being “pikers”. They just created another “Fiefdom” in the 42nd according to a regular Democratic participant who I actually agree with sometimes. Never had the stomach to join the club 100% locally because they have never been able to put together what you stated the local Republicans have.” their ground game formula down pat AND they go to meetings and raise a ruckus.” There are some very dedicated people in the group but it has been diluted by egotistical party hacks wheeling and dealing making their faux big tent about the size of a martini umbrella.I never did care for the kumbaya sing song way of fighting for democracy. Leadership has been absent for about a decade around this berg. Ditto on the “The Repubs and Tea Party whackos are much more dangerous than the so-called progressives and liberals think.” I Wish they base would figure that out some day instead of sniffing every tree and fire hydrant looking for answers.

  2. You know, I think Walter has something there. Thank for Riley, who’s one of those Belleringham people. Hopefully, the rest of us out here in the county will get in and vote. And, incidentally, a thanks to Ruth Higgins for also publicizing this and the need to get a ballot and vote.

    • Where is ‘Belleringham?’

      • Maybe she meant “door Belle ringing while carrying a Honey Baked ham (A. K. A. Riley Sweeney)”

      • Alright – settle down Walter and Wayne.

  3. More riley Sweeney BS. a tempest in a teapot no less.

He is the “a rather unusual call to action” email that i received from Charlie today:

This is not an election you will probably hear about because it is run from the Whatcom Conservation office rather than the Auditor’s office. (The Auditor normally runs all elections.)

We need to make certain you know how to support a candidate.

This election is coming up quickly. In order to vote,
you must request a ballot by February 9 or vote in person on March 10.
You will not get your ballot mailed to you unless you request it.

Its really easy to request a ballot just go on-line

To request your ballot follow this link or call (360) 354 – 2035 x 5

Ballots must be returned to the Whatcom Conservation District Office – 6975 Hannegan Road, Lynden, WA
or be postmarked no later than March 10, 2015.

On-site voting is available only on March 10, 2015 from 9 AM to 6 PM at the Whatcom Conservation District Office – 6975 Hannegan Road, Lynden, WA.

To get more information on the Conservation District

Call Incumbent Larry Helm if you need more information 360-961-9584

Please forward this e-mail to your friends and neighbors

Try a little harder to come up with some credible copy.

    • Wayne – I copy and pasted the email right into the blog post.

  4. YOU CHERRY PICKED=BAD JOURNALISM!

  5. The Radical Far Left Progressives of Bellingham are running scared in this election and this blog of Sweeney’s is meant to demean and denigrate any attempt for Conservatives to vote in this special election.

FYI-The Fourth Corner sent the “same e-mail at the same time in the same way” to make certain people were aware of that election as well.

The only thing that has changed is that the Radical Far Left Progressives of Bellingham including Tom Steyer (he has dumped well over a half million into Whatcom County over the last two elections) have brought Dirty Washington DC politics to our local and legislative races.

So The Fourth Corner still stands up and lets people (all voters) know there is an election and that they should vote without fear even with the silly name calling from the Radical Far Left Progressives of Bellingham who have their PANITIES IN A WAD again. 🙂

    • Panities in a wad? Is that like vanities in a wad? I suppose you must have briefed Tom Wolfe on how combustible wadded-up vanities really are. OR perhaps you briefed him on panities in a wad being combustible and he couldn’t read your handwriting.

      • Walter, I am happy you were able to figure out my “intended error”. Your “shock treatment therapy” appears to be working.

  6. I’m interested in how this doorbelling is going on downtown, given that almost every unit in the area is a controlled access apartment building or condo.

    • Jono (how about using a “real” name (as per the Sweeney Dictate).

Here is a tip: go to the call box panel, select an apartment (random or “Eeny, meent, miny, moe” works) and if someone answer tells them to get a ballot, complete it, vote for Larry Helm and mail it in.

  7. Silly name calling? Panties in a wad? Giggle….

    • Walter loves to call people names.

  8. Wayne,
Don’t you think it’s a bit presumptuous on your part to say what Riley intends? I’m a progressive but I’m certainly not considered “radical”. I do give you credit though. Stirring the pot on Riley’s Blog will get out the progressives and in a hidden election like this one, getting folks stirred up is a good thing since we have to request a ballot in order to receive one to exercise our right to vote. I requested my ballot when Joy announced and have not heard a word so far. I guess I won’t know if I’m going to get to vote until after the request period closes and by the it will be too late. What a lousy way to run a railroad, so to speak.

  9. MINOR ADDITION IN CAPS:

The Radical Far Left Progressives of Bellingham are running scared in this election and this blog of Sweeney’s is meant to demean and denigrate any attempt for Conservatives to vote in this special election.

FYI: THREE YEARS AGO The Fourth Corner sent the “same e-mail at the same time in the same way” to make certain people were aware of that election as well.

    • Since you made a correction, you really must have meant to write “panities.” I now think you are conflating panic with panties to add emphasis. Ergo “panities in a wad” must be “panties in a wad” squared. Bravo Wayne! You must be wearing my tinfoil hat.

      • By the way, Wayne, since you have my tinfoil hat, I have to make another one. I got a really short haircut today so I can make a sorta kinda skullcap version of a tinfoil hat. I plan on wearing it when I go to Washington to hear Netanyahoo’s speech to the Republican Congress. I imagine I will fit in quite well with all the rest of Netanyahoo’s yahoos.

      • Actually Walter, I was waiting for my Breville Panini Press, that my wife bought me for Christmas, to heat up, hence my conjunction of panties and panini.

I am surprised you have any hair left from all your scratching of your head.

At least we will have a REAL leader speaking before Congress instead of the joker who spoke on January 20th.

  10. Wayne-
“…this blog of Sweeney’s is meant to demean and denigrate any attempt for Conservatives to vote in this special election.” How so?

You speak of radical far-left progressives in Bellingham… like who? I haven’t heard of any that have a political office, and I have heard of very few otherwise. What about the radical far-right conservatives in other parts of the county?

    • Did I say anything about them holding political office? Show me.

      • I never implied that you said anything about them holding political office.

Who is a radical far-right conservative and who is not is purely a matter of opinion. What you call a radical far-right conservative is very different than what I call a radical far-right conservative. If I go by my opinion, I could name lots.

    • There are NO “radical far-right conservatives”. If you know one, name him/her.

      • Did Jason Overstreet count?
