Your Chance to Speak about the Jail

Tonight, you have a rare opportunity. The county is holding a public meeting about the jail and you will have an opportunity to share your thoughts and perspective with the jail planners.

Public Comment Meeting about the Jail
September 26th, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m
Ferndale City Council Chambers
5694 2nd Avenue in Ferndale

Frequent readers of my blog know that it has been a difficult journey getting us to this point. Starting with the proposal back in 2008 and 2011 for an 820 bed jail, the project has been reduced to 649 beds . . . but that is still too large.

Join me in attending this meeting and speaking in favor of a 521 bed facility. We can use the saved money to fund a mental health triage center, a court reminder call system, juvenile justice, drug court and many of the other, cheaper ways to reduce our jail needs and promote a healthy community.

The Bellingham Herald has been filled with letters to the editor about this and Lisa McShane had a great editorial in the Cascadia Weekly laying out some of these issues. But the end game is tonight, you have an opportunity to get on the record about what our needs are.

See you there!
