Friday Odds and Ends: Year-End Survey, Crapo Drivers and Local Talent

Hello Loyal Readers,

It is that time again, as Ralph Schwartz of the Herald noted, for Friday’s Odds and Ends. All the news that is fit to print, but not enough to justify a whole post.

I’m glad everyone here survived the holidays! In addition to our end of the year video that Shane Roth and I produced, (you can find it here) there is one more piece of business that needs to be taken care of before 2013 comes crashing in. That is our Reader’s Survey. Last year, I conducted a reader’s survey that helped shape what sort of content to produce in 2012. You, the loyal readers, let me know that while you loved my political reporting, my articles about the difference between idealistic and cynical science fiction were not the reason you were stopping by. So this year, I need your input once again to help me identify where to spend my energy for 2013.

Please Take Our 2012 Reader’s Survey

It is only six questions and it is completely anonymous. Thank you.

Sen. Mike Crapo

Meanwhile the senior Senator from Idaho, one Mike Crapo (pronounced “cray-po” apparently) got busted for a DUI in Virginia. This wouldn’t be nearly as shocking if it weren’t for the fact that Sen. Crapo is a devout Mormon, and allegedly does not drink. However, according to Salon, he had “consumed several shots of vodka” before climbing behind the wheel. This actually puts him in line as the second most embarrassing senator from Idaho, after former senator Larry Craig who got arrested for soliciting gay sex in an airport bathroom.

Our new Congressional Representatives were assigned to committees recently. Rep. Derek Kilmer (D) who is replacing my old boss and legislative powerhouse Rep. Norm Dicks, was placed on the Armed Services Committee. This is a good fit considering he represents the third largest navel base in the nation (Bremerton and Bangor). Rep. Denny Heck (D) was placed on the Budget Committee, another strong choice for someone with his business credentials, and our own Rep. Suzan DelBene (D) was placed on the Judiciary Committee. At first, I was perplexed by this choice, but seeing as how the next key battles in the Judiciary Committee will be concerning technology, privacy, information sharing and women’s health choices, having the passionately pro-choice, former Microsoft executive in that role is a wise move. Best of luck to all our new representatives.

Finally, business leaders often complain that there aren’t enough skilled workers in the job pool. Well, complain no more. Let me introduce you to a young man who just graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in accounting. He has a year of real world accounting experience (fully trained on Quickbooks and Peachtree) and a whole slew of technical skills. He is diligent, polite and one of the most ethical and trustworthy people I know. Naturally, he is my brother Devlin Sweeney and is looking for a job. If this sounds like just the right employee for you, drop him an email here, and he will gladly furnish an email or really, any materials you request.

I think that is enough shameless promotion for one post. As always, thank you for reading and stay warm out there, Winter is Coming has arrived.
