Jean Melious Announces Run for County Council

Bellingham, WA – April 9, 2010: Jean Melious, chair of the Whatcom County Planning Commission, announced her intention to run for County Council today.

“We need a council that values good jobs, clean air and water and responsible growth,” said Jean Melious. “I am ready to bring some common sense back to the county council.”

Melious is running for the district one seat, currently held by Ward Nelson, that is up for election this year. Nelson was appointed to fill the rest of Bob Kelly’s term when he resigned in November.

“I grew up on a farm in a deeply conservative county in upstate New York. I chose to move to Bellingham and raise my family here because I fell in love with all this County has to offer,” said Melious. “To make sure that our children can enjoy all this legacy, we need to be responsible with how we grow and more responsible with our tax dollars. Safe and sustainable business practices, good living-wage jobs, and a clean environment. Those are our Whatcom County values, and that is what I will bring to the table as your next County Councilwoman.”

Melious teaches environmental law as an associate professor at Western Washington University. She is has been the chair of the county planning commission since 2007 and lives in Bellingham with her husband Devon and their two children Nate and Claire, who attend Bellingham High School.
