Hello! Riley here. Up in Bellingham we have had a little bit of infighting for the last four weeks since since Bob Kelly decided to resign his County Council seat and Pete Kremen, the Whatcom County Executive (Lieberman-style democrat) had the choice of selecting his replacement. In an earlier post, I made the case for Dan McShane, but clearly, I don’t have the ear of Mr. Kremen because he picked Ward Nelson.
Aside from having a name that stumbled out of a 1950’s sitcom, Ward Nelson was retiring from the council this year. He was retiring because he was a conservative that was tired of being in the minority. However, because of the last election, the county council was all tied up. With Bob Kelly resigning there was an opening to be in the majority so he jumped at it.
This is what bothers me most about republicans. After Obama was elected, there was a whole wave of republicans calling for secession from the United States of America. They didn’t want to be in a country in which they did not have power. On a less dramatic level, you saw several republican congress-critters resigning from their seats and taking jobs with companies.
Its cowardly. If you want to be a public servant, and to represent your people to the best of your ability, you do that. You don’t call it quits because for the next four years you will have to compromise or be stubborn in your opposition. You can still do good things in the minority. I know. I’m a democrat. We lived like this for six years from 2000 to 2006. It was really crazy and depressing but we didn’t call to leave. We didn’t give up. We went back to basics and found new candidates and ran for election.
I wish Ward had the courage to keep working in the minority, or if he was legitimately done being a public servant to retire and not seek this appointment. However, he apparently lacks this courage. Just like his national party.
