Health Care Reform Update

Last couple of posts, I outlined various possibilities for what could happen. Here’s what actually happened. Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) suddenly developed half a spine and put the public option in the bill that is going to be voted on. However there is one catch. There is an opt-out provision. So if states don’t want to be part of it, their legislatures can vote to opt-out. This is great because no one actually will. Social Security had an opt-out but it was so popular, no one ever did. Same deal here.

So the bill has the public option. Next they will schedule discussion and then a vote. Discussion can go on a long time, and they will need 60 votes to get people to shut up so they can vote. Luckily, Conservative Democrats who don’t like the public option can vote to shut up debate and then turn around and vote against the bill without dooming it. Once debate is closed (a vote for Cloture), then all we need is 51 votes, and we have that many people committed to voting for this bill.

Long story short, if this comes up for a vote soon, we will have a public option by 2010.
