I just finished reading this fabulous post about feminism and the movie industry.
In this post they talk about the Bechdel Test which is named after Allison Bechdel, who writes “Dykes to Watch Out For” and “Fun Home” both fabulous comics. In one of her weekly strips, her characters talk about whether or not a movie is good. The best way to determine if it has fully fleshed out female characters is this:
1) there are at least two named female characters, who
2) talk to each other about
3) something other than a man.
Very simple. Think about your favorite movie. Does it have a scene like that? At all? Read the above link. It will raise your feminist hackles.
For the record, my favorite movie fails this test (The Princess Bride), while my two runners up (Amelie and Stardust) pass.
